My name is Dick Glasgow and as founding member of North Antrim group Scad the Beggars I'd like to welcome you to our website.

We are a 6 piece group, based in North Antrim, who enjoy playing the Traditional Music and Song of Ulster, Scotland, Ireland and Northumberland. We play a wide variety of instruments, including: Northumbrian Smallpipes, Fifes, Whistles, Fiddle, Mandolin,
English Concertina, Piano Accordion, Oboe, Harp, Nyckelharpa, Guitar and the Hammered Dulcimer

We are happy to provide background music for your Wedding Drinks Reception & we also enjoy being asked to perform our brand of traditional music & song from North Antrim for a variety of formal & informal concert formats.

If you'd like to hear us play, you're also welcome to join us at either of our weekly sessions, every Saturday night in the Bushmills Inn & every Thursday night in the Diamond Bar, Ballymoney.

Incidentally, for the curious amongst you, the name Scad the Beggars is that of a local delicacy here - Oatmeal fried in Bacon Fat.

Riley Piddington

Vocals, Guitar & Mandolin

Riley, a retired School Principal, is a Co. Antrim man and our singer. He also plays Guitar & Mandolin and is fond of singing songs from the local Sam Henry collection.

  • For the past 20 years Scad the Beggars has maintained a regular weekly Pub Session in Bushmills. First in the Smugglers Inn & for the past 12 years in the Bushmills Inn. For about eight years we have also maintained a weekly Pub Session in Ballymoney, first in Ma-Kelly's Bar & then more recently in the Diamond Bar. These open sessions give local musicians & singers an opportunity to join us & share their music.

  • Our line up remained pretty constant for many years but more recently Alan Wade decided to head for musical pastures new & we were delighted to be joined by two new members at our traditional Thursday night line up, namely Deborah Mairs & Steven Wilson who were quickly signed up to perform as band members.
  • Our material in Ballymoney each week is purely of a traditional nature with the members you see in the photo above.
  • In Bushmills, on the other hand, with Desie & Brian in the line up, we include some more middle of the road material, albeit still using traditional instruments, in order to appeal to a wider audience.

Scad the Beggars - the 'Black Nun Folk Club' years.

As well as playing at literally hundreds of informal Sessions over the years, Scad the Beggars have also played at a variety of clubs and festivals.

I founded & ran the Black Nun Folk Club in North Antrim for eight years & members of Scad the Beggars would usually start those nights off so we have supported a wide variety of artists over the years, so not only Traditional Irish and Scottish Singers and Musicians, but also Singer Songwriters, Bluegrass and Old Time Musicians plus a number of Rock and Country groups too!

Two such regular attenders and performers at the Black Nun Folk Club were Riley Piddington and Desie Hasson, who not only attended the Folk Club but would also join us in our local Pub Sessions, so before long they also became members of the regular Scad the Beggars line up.

During this time another Co. Antrim man, Sam Fleming, began joining our weekly Pub Session & as Sam was a multi instrumentalist playing Northumbrian Pipes, Whistle & Harmonica he fitted in very well & quickly became a member of our merry band.

In 2003 I organised the Black Nun Fest in 2003, in Ballycastle, & Scad the Beggars played support act to the festival's headline band Malinky. Then in 2005 I organised the Causeway Dulcimer Festival when we also got a number of opportunities to perform at various sessions & concerts.

After the success of Ptarmigan, I decided to keep the momentum going by forming a group to continue to promote the Traditional Tunes, the Songs and Rhymes that are popular throughout North Antrim, so I gathered up a few like minded souls and formed this new group.

We needed a name so we left it up to local wordsmith Charlie Gillen, to come up with some suitable couthie local words & expressions which might work as a suitable handle for this new ensemble. From all his suggestions we settled on - Scad the Beggars.

For those of you who are not familiar with this term, Scad the Beggar, is actually a local term for mealie-crushie, which is Oatmeal fried in Bacon Fat  - so now you know!

The original line up included founder members Sabine, Charlie & Dick, plus 3 new musicians Alan, Colin & Greg.

So the initial line up & instrumentation was as follows:
Dick Glasgow: Fiddle, Hammered Dulcimer, Mandolin and Anglo Concertina.
Sabine Glasgow: Harp and Fifes.
Charlie Gillen: Rhymes and Banter.
Alan Wade: Scottish Smallpipes.
Colin Urwin: Vocals and Guitar.
Greg Gault: Guitar.

This line up lasted for a couple of years, with our final gig performing as guest artists at the 'Music on the Move' festival, in the Ulster American Folk Park, in May of 2004. Just before that concert Colin left the group & shortly afterwards Charlie decided to leave the group to spend more time at his writing & his radio career and that was effectively, the end of the 2nd chapter.

However, the remaining four members soldiered on, keeping the group's name alive, in order to continue to promote the traditional music of the area.

In 2000 well known local North Antrim Rhymer Charlie Gillen approached me to come up with some suitable music for a Tape of North Antrim Rhymes he was working on. I thought it sounded like a wonderful idea, but rather than just play the music myself, I decided it'd be much more fun & interesting, to ask a few musical friends if they might like to get involved in the project and fortunately they all agreed, so a new group was formed - 'Ptarmigan'.

This is Charlie Gillen, in the centre, with 'Ptarmigan'

I hunted around for suitable tunes that would reflect the variety of traditional music which was favoured throughout the North Antrim area and I then proceeded to arrange the music to suit Charlie's Rhymes and the varied instruments of the musicians involved.

The musicians I chose for this project were:

Robert Watt: Scottish Small Pipes & Whistles
Valerie Quinn: Piano Accordion
Emma Culbert: Piano Accordion & Tin Whistle
Sabine Glasgow: Clarsach
Gregory Gault: Acoustic Guitar
Kevin Glasgow: Acoustic Bass
Paul McAuley: Bodhran
& of course myself, Dick Glasgow: Fiddle, Banjo, Concertina & Mandola.

The resulting Cassette Tape and CD were called - When a' the Kye Had Names

The Wildlife of Breen Oak Wood

The Wildlife of Breen Oak Wood

Breen Wood is one of the best examples of old Sessile Oak Woods in Northern Ireland. It is a National Nature Reserve & the ancient gnarled and stunted oak trees which form most of the canopy, help to provide the magical atmosphere of this special place. I took the photos which help to show off some of its wildlife.
