Breen Oak Wood is one of the best examples of old Sessile Oak Woods in Northern Ireland. It is a National Nature Reserve & the ancient gnarled and stunted oak trees which form most of the canopy, help to provide the magical atmosphere of this special place. I took the photos which help to show off some of its wildlife.
At one time, Oak Woods covered much of north-east Antrim. Gradually, the trees were felled for timber and the land cleared for farming. Today, Breen Oakwood Nature Reserve is one of the last fragments of these once extensive native oak woodlands. It's part of the larger Breen Forest.
